Today was the first day that the Cairns Show was on, so I went there with Aaron and his sister, whose birthday it was. It was in the showground, and consisted of fairground rides, exhibition of livestock (I found it funny that on my day off, I was finding out about beef, and where each cut of meat came form on the cow. I also found the 'sponsored by McDonalds' advert on the chicken cages highly amusing), and a fruit and veg display. I'm not sure how one lemon can be judged as better than another, or how one chicken can be awarded higher, although saying that, there were some really ugly bumpy bits on some of the turkeys, and one chicken had really long, muscly legs so that it looked a bit like a human being. I was gutted that I lost my cow temporary tattoo. There was a competition to make models out of fruit and veg, so for an example someone had cut a bit off the front of an aubergine and put a face on to make a penguin. We went on one ride called extreme, but decided it wasn't really worth paying to go on any more since all the scary rides are pretty much the same- they all spin you about in various ways. We also watched Aaron go on the dodgems, and he looked like he was enjoying himself.
It was the last game in the State of Origin NRL gam- the decider- so Dane had a BBQ at his house. Australians tend to have their meat with sliced bread, but I rebelled by buying some rolls and tabbouleh salad to go with the steaks, lamb cutlets, sausages and rissoles. The potato salad his sister made was really nice- it had egg, bacon, and spring onion in as well as the obvious potato and mayonnaise. Queensland won, so most people were happy.
