Any tips we get over $5, we get to keep ourselves, and any under we put in a tip jar which gets shared out equally (or proportionally to the hours we do) after every month or so. Today Chats counted out the tip jar, and gave me my share in an envelope. I didn't put it in my front apron pocket as I didn't want to keep pulling that out instead of my notepad and pen. Later on I went to the toilet, and looked down… I was weeing on my envelope which must have fallen out my back pocket! Then, I held it over the bin, but because it was wet the coins fell out into the bin, so I had to go bin-diving! Nightmare!
I went down to Nomads Waterfront (one of the other hostels Dave owns) so that I could book 'Tjapukai by Night'- an aboriginal dance show for tomorrow night. Nick (who is the manager of Nomads) said he'd give it to me for $85 because I worked at reef, but it kept going on hold when he rang up the bookings office, so I said I'd just book it myself over the phone. I thought I may as well try get it for $85, but the woman I got put through to said she'd been working there for 7 years and didn't know what I was on about- if I worked there I could try and get a discount by emailing the marketing people for an immersion (I think that's what she called it, but I think you have to be a receptionist to get that, as its so that you can sell the tours you go on and know what it's all about). I had a voucher for %10 discount so I just asked for that. She said that was fine and then asked if there was anything else she could help me with, and when I replied no, she put the phone down on me, without taking my booking- idiot!
Billy- the night porter- told me and Alice that Byron Bay is quite touristy, and that Noosa was also a good place for surfing, which triggered me and Alice (who was on reception) to get all excited and research places down the East coast that we could next try and get work at.
