It was a bit of a struggle, but me and Bex both managed to get up for our 6.30 am training session. The girl showing us seemed quite quiet and not really bothered about doing a good job. We have to clean the mirror, wipe the doors, clean sinks and toilets, sweep and mop the floor and clean the showers. It gets incredibly sweaty in the morning heat in a humid shower! Our free breakfast of toast and a choice of vegemite, jam and marmalade is served from 7-9, and the girl who did our induction said we were entitled to a break (she said to take a long one so that we don't finish before our time is up and have to do more work), but Bex said Erin had told a girl off for having a 10 minute break the other day. I'm not sure how Bex is supposed to eat her breakfast or me my dinner if we don't get a break as our hours overlap.
Our key card was playing up, and so Alice was stood outside our room for about 10 minutes in her pyjamas and so was late for her first housekeeping shift.
After showering, I waited in reception for the 11 o'clock free bus into town, but ended up waiting a while before finding out there was no such thing as an 11 o'clock bus. I got the 12 one instead, and walked to the computer shop near our old hostel, as I wanted to print out my CV. On the way, I stubbed my toe (I only realised when I looked down and saw a pool of blood on my flip-flop that it was bleeding). I asked a hostel if I could use their toilet to mop it up, and was very chatty to the guy at reception in the hope he'd give me a job. He said that there was only 2 weeks left of the high season and so they weren't going to bother looking for anyone now, but that backpackers often get jobs on Gum tree.
The weather was very hot here, but I think it had flooded elsewhere and it caused the internet and phone connections to be bad, so the computer shop was open (it was a public holiday today) but they couldn't recharge the swipe cards to use the self-serve printer, and all the other printing shops I walked past were closed.
I went to the shopping centre to find a handbag as I thought if I turned up to apply for a job with my falling apart one I'd get turned down immediately. There weren't any that were particularly outstanding, but I found one that was alright and not too expensive. However, I had left most of my money in my money belt at the hostel, but because of the card charges I wanted to get out a large amount to make it relatively less. The only ATM working (because of the floods) had a massive queue, which took about 20 minutes to get to the front of.
I walked back to the hostel (which was an incredibly sweaty journey) because the bus wasn't going to come for another 45 minutes or so, but I only arrived there about 10 minutes earlier than I would have done if I had waited. I applied for a few jobs posted online.
I started doing my cleaning shift, until I went outside to tell Alice and Bex that I wanted my dinner earlier than 7.30, and Erin told me I wasn't supposed to start until tomorrow (as I had already done 3 hours this morning). Free dinner was a very small portion of roasted vegetables on carrot mash, followed by a self-brought cherry chocolate bar (I didn't realise it was also coconut flavoured).
We played pool with a Canadian bar and him and Alice won. We were talking to him and his sister for a while before hitting the sack early for our early starts tomorrow (mine's self-inflicted as I want to carry on productively job searching).
