Arrived in Beijing this morning at 8 and then overdosed on MacDonalds hot chocolates whilst I waited for Hannah to arrive at 11:30. When Hannah arrived we went for a Starbucks and a Subway sandwich then got our return tickets for Thursday. The journey to Harbin was very nice - we had only been able to get first class tickets so there was plenty of room. We arrived just before 10 and got a taxi to our hostel. The cold was surprisingly not as bad as I had expected - it averages about -20 here so I thought it was going to be painful but actually in short doses it was very manageable. Checked into the hostel which deserves all of the bad reviews it has on hostelworld, and then walked up the road to find some food. We stumbled upon a very Chinese restaurant which after a great deal of negotiation on the vegetarian front brought us cabbage and potato to cook on a frying pot which was put onto our table. You are supposed to cook it yourself but the obviously took pity on us and we ended up with our own personal chef! The food was then dipped in spices before you eat it - it was absolutely lovely. Went back to the hostel and we wanted to play tablt football but we got told off for making too much noise so we went to our room and watched a Chinese soap on TV.
