Up again early and the weather had got worse and so I expected the Wall trip to be cancelled again, but to my surprise they decided to go ahead with it. Maybe the extra number of people they had persuaded them to take a risk!! We drove in a minibus out to a village all of us wondering if it was a good idea as the snow looked like it was set it for the day and given that we were driving at 10 miles and hour it looked likely we would be stranded! Arrived at the village after a couple of hours and a local trekked with us up to the wall. It was completely different to the previous experiences I have had of the wall. Totally unrestored and without the same presence of Mutianyu. It was still nice and looked beautiful with the snow although that made it quite difficult to walk on. Getting up wasn't too bad but coming back down was a nightmare. It was very slippery and with shear drops on each side I didn't feel at all comfortable. In the end I was virtually dragged down by the guide (who was about 80!) and Amit! After a 2 hour trek, we went back into the village where we were given a local lunch of noodles, rice, tofu and vegetables before heading back to the hostel. We were all relieved to get back to base. Found out this evening that the government has withdrawn all permits to Tibet for the next month because of the protests. I was gutted - it was such a good path to take to India and would have been a great way to finish in China. Spent the evening going through alternative options - Mongolia, Burma, etc, etc but finally decided that sun was the number one priority and booked a flight to Malaysia.
