30 Sep 2008
Breakfast in the hostel and then we set off for the Forbidden City. We walked for about 40 minutes then realised that none of us could read the map and that we had no idea where we were heading for and so go ourselves a taxi. 30 minutes later we arrived! The Forbidden City is nothing short of amazing - it is so vast that it's difficult to imagine that people actually lived there. We wandered around for about 3 hours and I'm sure there's still plenty that we missed. I left the rest of the group after this and headed off to meet Casey and to get our bus to Xi'an. The sleeper bus we were getting was actually surprisingly okay. It looked like a standard bus from the outside, but when you got inside it had a row of bunk beds along each edge and a row down the centre. Each 'bed' was shaped in the same way as a dentist chair and whilst it felt a bit cramped to start with I soon found it was actually very comfortable. My 'bed' was right at the front on the top bunk, so my feet were actually against the front windscreen. I was a little nervous when we first set off - expecting to fall off at each turn or bump, but after about half an hour I started to relax and ended up sleeping most of the 15 hours to Xi'an.
