Got back to Beijing at 5 this morning having had a reasonable amount of sleep all things considered. I wanted to pop into a couple of shops in Beijing, and so in order to fill the time, I decided to go to the raising of the flag at Tian'an Men Square which happens at sunrise. I arrived there at 6 to find the crowd was already 4 people deep. By the time the flag finally went up, there were thousands of people there. I guess it was the equivalent of our changing of the guard (but with a bigger crowd). The soldiers marched in and then 2 of them went up and raised the flag whilst some rousing music played over the loud speakers. The ceremony only lasted about 10 minutes so then I wandered off to find a Macdonalds to sit it until the shops opened. Caught the bus back to Huairou about midday and then spent the afternoon doing not much. Hannah came back this evening and we caught up on what we'd both been doing.
