Meet Miss Cao at school first thing this morning and she took me to the dentist which is actually only about 5 minutes from our apartment. You can't book an appointment here, you just have to queue, so when we arrived we were told we would probably have to wait about an hour or two! I was encouraged to see that all the dentists were wearing 'dentist like' clothes and everything looked very clean. What wasn't so great was the fact that the dental work took place in full view of all those waiting! Anyway, luckily the wait was only about 45 minutes and then it was my turn. She took a look, and started saying something about removing the tooth! I panicked and said I just needed something temporary to last me until I got back to the UK and she said then she would just file it smooth and it would be ok. At least I think that's what was said - the translation was a bit ropey!! Went into Beijing this afternoon to try and buy bus tickets to Xi'an. I had an hour to spare and decided to visit Tian'an Men Square. It was very busy there, and it looked just as I expected it to, but somehow I felt it lacked the impact I thought it would have. I expected it to be a bit more formal and imposing, but then I guess it is just a square! I wanted to go and see Mao's casket, but unfortunately it is only open in the mornings so I will have to go back for that. Met Casey and we took a tube and then a taxi to West Beijing Bus Station. I can't believe for such a major transport centre (Asias biggest train station is also there) what poor transport links they have!! We queued and requested tickets but the poor assistant kept saying 'Mayo' - we don't have any. We tried at 2 more to check she had not misunderstood us, and then someone told us to try line 2. Here the assistant spoke a little English and was able to tell us that they had sold out for Monday. We asked about Tuesday, and bingo, we got tickets! Unfortunately you can't buy returns, and so we just have to pray that we can get some return tickets when we arrive in Xi'an!
