Got up early this morning and took the bus to Beijing where we went to see Lama Temple, a spectular temple whose highlight is a 55 ft high statue of Buddha carved from a single block of sandlewood. After this we crossed the road to Confucious Temple, a much more low key temple away from the large crowds. After having our fill of temples, we headed for Wangfujing Street, the main shopping area in Beijing to treat ourselves to a starbucks coffee and check out the Forelgn Languages Bookstore for some reading material. From here we meet with Cassie and went to the Silk Market which sells everything you could ever want but particuarly designer fakes. It was good fun haggling for purchases but made buying things really hard work! I bought a top which started at 330 yuan but I settled on a price of 50 yuan! Today was the mid autumn festival (moon festival) in China, which means we get a bank holiday tomorrow. On this day, the people celebrate the end of the summer harvesting season by getting together to burn incense, admire the moon and to eat mooncake - a kind of Chinese version of the mince pie.
