Checked out of the hostel first thing and got a taxi to the hotel where we are staying for the remainder of our visit. I am surprised at the lack of snow around - I expected there to be several inches of snow everywhere, but instead it is just ice around the pavements where it has snowed at some point and not fully cleared. We met up with Kirsty, Pete, Alexis and Dave at the hotel - 3 of whom we knew from the teacher training, and went to a cafe we knew that did Western style breakfasts. Then we got taxis and went to Ice and Snow world which is full of life size ice and snow sculptures of famous buildings from around the world. It's incredible - may of these sculptures can be walked on and to touch them you wouldn't know it was ice - it feels more like glass blocks. There were only about a dozen people in the show today as many people just come at night. All of the sculptures have coloured lights built into them which are turned on at night. We stayed in the show about 4 hours in the end looking at the sculptures, trying out the activities - ice cycling and tyre slides - and thawing out over an occasional coffee. The cold was okay in small batches but after a while it started to get quite painful when you couldn't feel your fingers and toes anymore! Alexis and Dave left at 3 and we stayed for a short while longer and then went to get some food on walking street. We then went to Zhaolin Park where they had another display of sculptures on a smaller but more detailed level. The theme for the year was Disney and so they had areas dedicated to Pirates of the Carribean, Winnie the Pooh, Toy Story and many other disney favourites. Because by now it was all dark, these had been lit up and it really added to the magic of the park. Also in here were a number of sculptures which had been entered into a competition which showed an incredible amount of detail and a fairground built into ice! By 7:30 we could bear the cold no more and so we got a taxi back to the hotel and then walked to one of our favourite haunts from our previous time here - Sky Bar!! We met up with Angela, Amy and Johannes 3 more of the interns who had been placed in Harbin, and had a few drinks.
