Had my lessons with the Korean school this morning but the students were depressed and so it was impossible to get them to do anything. Basically many of the students parents had come to visit the school and taken their children out for the day - only the students whos parents hadn't come were actually in class and obviously they felt it was really unfair that they still had to do lessons. I raised this with the other teachers during the first break and was relieved to find they had all had the same problem. We agreed to do games for the second period until Connie could get hold of the head of school to get further instructions as to what we should do. After the second lesson I was told that the rest of the classes had been cancelled. The weather was beautiful today and we decided to have a quiet day around Huairou. We wandered around the town, checking out the shops and stopping occassionally to try some street food. On one of these stops a Chinese student came up to us and asked if she could practise her English with us. We chatted for a while and then she joined us on our continued exploring of the town. This evening we were going to stay in and try out some Spanish wine we had found hidden in one of the supermarkets - it's normally impossible to find any wine other than Chinese. Anyway, the wine turned out to be very drinkable but by the end of it we both felt like going dancing and headed out to Disco 9 where the main singer made a point of saying "hello" in English from the stage and everyone in the club turned around to look at us! The biggest surprise of the night was when we went to the toilets and found a doorway leading to a roller disco! How we have never seen that before I have no idea!! We meet up with some Chinese people we have gotten to know and after the club closed we all went to KTV. KTV is the Chinese version of karaoke which is much nicer (I think!) than the way we do it. You are put in a rectangular room which is just for your group with a large sofa (big enough for about 12) and a massive tv screen. Basically you choose songs and just sit on the sofas with a couple of microphones and sing along whilst waiters bring in drinks. It's just like being in someone's back room - very civilised!
