Had one lesson before lunch and then had the afternoon off because my class 14has been moved to Thursday for this week. Hannah always gets Tuesday afternoons off, so we decided to make something of it and went for a leisurely lunch at a Korean restaurant we have been eyeing up for some time by the lake. It was a lovely day as well, and so we were able to sit outside in the sun. The people in the restaurant were really lovely, bringing us lots of things to try and using my Chinese / English dictionary to help us find suitable vegetarian food. The food was amazing and as we ended up with far too much we ended up staying there for a few hours just picking at the left overs. After we had finished lunch we went for a bit of a wander and found a whole new area we had not stumbled on before - it's surprising how big Huairou actually is. We bumped into an older guy Tom, who we had gotten speaking to whilst in one of the local parks last week. He lived in New York for 30 years and so speaks fantastic English which is very rare around here. Anyway, he invited us into his home to drink tea, and then took us for a walk around the area. We saw some people burning money (not real!) and he was able to tell us that they were doing it for the dead people - sending them money for winter clothes as it is getting cold!!! We also went past a row of derelict bars in a newish building which is apparantly where they tried to put in some Western style bars with Western style price tags which failed miserably. It was great being able to get some local knowledge and he has offered to loan us his kitchen any time as it is much more Western than most!
