Got up early to get to the showers before anyone else could make them dirty - the accomodation actually wasn't too bad considering it was only 3 pound a night - the bed was reasonably comfortable and whilst I was cold with just the blanket on top of my sheet sleeping bag, I did find out later that there was a duvet in one of the cupboards! The shower was okay but there was only one of them so I wouldn't like to be there in the busy season. Went to meet for the tour at 9 - there were only 2 other people booked on the tour (Badou from Chile and Matt from Canada who has been working as a teacher in Korea) so we didn't get a guide (you needed 5 people to get one) but we just stuck together and each contributed whatever information we could from our guide books. First stop was the Yungang Caves. These were absolutely incredible - I knew there were 20 caves, but I thought that just a few would contain carvings. In fact, they all had something to offer and the colours in a few of them were so vibrant it was hard to believe that they are 1,500 years old. The detail in all of them was fantastic. After this we went to the Hanging Temple, and whilst this was my primary reason for coming to Datong, it pailed into insignificance after seeing the caves. I mean I'm glad I saw it, but it's just a temple in a wierd location! We got back about 3 and went to get some food together, then I went to try and change my train ticket to go back to Beijing tonight, a day early. I just felt that I had seen everything and having spoken to various people thought I was going to be bored beyond reason if I had to stay for another 24 hours. Managed to get onto the overnight train leaving at 22:25, so checked out of the hostel and went to the internet cafe. Went to board my train at 22:00, and felt like I'd gone back in time - the train looked like something from the 1940's with lots of men carrying bedding sacks which made them look like they were coming back from war! I was glad that I'd splashed out on a hard sleeper tickets, and even more glad when it turned out to be a bottom bunk. The bunks were stacked up in 3's and I'm not sure quite how I would have got onto the top one! We all had a pillow and a duvet so it was actually quite snug - just a little hard and compact!
