Day 148: 28/5/13
Another morning not knowing where I was going or what time I'd to leave! It's getting pretty annoying!! I had no call by twenty past seven so I decided to head towards the station. On the way I got a call to go to the school I was in last Thursday which is a pretty long train ride away. I got a train anyway that just about got me there on time. It was a good job I was already on the way to the station. There isn't a very long walk to the school but you've to cross a few busy roads and wait for the pedestrian crossings which slows down the journey! Anyway I got there!! I had grade 1 the last day I was here and it was grade 1 again- the class next door. The teacher that had been out Thursday had been out since and was going to be out all week. I had a school that asked for me on Friday so that probably ruled me out for this one!!
The teacher hadn't any work left but after a bit of questioning we figured out where her timetable was. They had reading groups first. There didn't seem to be activities for each group and on the weekly timetable and it was written that they were going to do contractions so we did some work on the board on contractions all together and then they wrote some in their book. They definitely weren't used to working from the board or writing too much!! We survived it anyway!! After that they had music and I went to a prep class where they were doing reading groups and I just read with one of the groups. After break my class were playing maths games- the same ones that the class next door had played last week. I don't know if that was right or not but it seemed to me what was written on the timetable! I'm sure they would have been very quick to tell me if they had done it the other day! Then they did silent reading and handwriting. Those subjects could have been done in about ten minutes but we dragged them out! That's all that was down on the timetable anyway! After lunch we went to the 'patch' which was the school garden. There's a parent who runs it and she got then to plant some coriander and some broad beans. The garden was big with different sections for different herbs and plants. There was also a chicken coop- lots of schools seem to have this school garden and most have a kitchen so they can use the herbs in cooking. It's a lovely idea! There was a little bit of time left then so I played the tin whistle for them- I don't know what I'd do without the tin-whistle!!
After school I headed towards St Kilda as I had an appointment later in the evening to get the malaria tablets. The train took forever for some reason- it kept stopping altogether. It's a good job that didn't happen in the morning! I met Laura in St Kilda as she doesn't live too far away. We had tea/coffee and a chat. We went for some churros too- I'd never tasted them before but they were lovely! We had a nice chat about schools, kids, travelling home, the usual! She'll be flying home in a week. Time flies!!
It only took a few minutes to get the prescription for the malarone tablets. I'd been on malarone before and didn't have side effects. The doctor was going to give me the other one which is cheaper but I'd heard you get more sunburned on that one and the doctor say that was one of the side effects. She said malarone is more toxic and often causes nausea but seen as I was fine with it before she gave it to me. I didn't want to be sunburned badly!! So the only bad thing is I have the more expensive one- I need less tablets of it though, but still. I need 39 tablets but they only come in 24 so I have to get 48 but you can only get 24 at a time here so I have to get 2 prescriptions, 21 days apart!! Talk about regulations!!
It took a while to get home then as I thought the tram in St Kilda would bring me right into the city but it only brought me half way and then I had to get a different tram! I definitely prefer trains to trams!
