Day 39: 8/2/13
Laura and I were both up early enough this morning, but we spent ages chatting at breakfast so it was almost 12 before we were ready to leave the house! Laura had gotten these few days off so we were free to roam around.
We went to the Aquarium first. We saw lots of penguins- you could see them waddling around, swimming, minding eggs ob their feet! There was a fairly big sea horse display too. We had gotten a ticket to go behind the scenes and see how they feed the sea horses and things. It seems Melborne has more sea horses than any other zoo or aquarium and they provide sea horses to lots of places. I had never seen a sea dragon before which looked fairly cool- it actually looks like seaweed, rather than an animal. There was a cool tunnel area then that had sharks and rays and lots of other fish swimming around in them. Some of the rays were massive. It was cool because when they swam over the tunnel it felt like they were right over your head! There were some cool glowing jellyfish aswell and lots and lots of other fish that I can't even remember!
We walked towards the centre of the city then and came across a pub that Laura knew had nice beer. So we went in! You could buy a selection of six small glasses of beer to taste so we did that- trying to figure out which we liked best!
In the centre of the city then we walked along the river. I think the area is called Southbank aswell, which is the same as Brisbane. It was a very arty area- there were singers, fire jugglers, a guy with a didgeridoo, a guy painting pictures with spray paint. You could spend ages wandering around there.
We went on then to the Eureka sky tower which is the tallest building in Melbourne. There's a viewing area on the 88th floor- our ears were popping in the lift up! We had decided to go at dusk so it was bright when we got up there, we saw all the sights that had telescopes pointing directly at them, we saw the sun set over the city and then could watch all the lights of the traffic and everything in the dark! It was pretty cool! Up there aswell you could get a ticket to do the edge experience so we did that. You go in a glass box which is pushed out over the edge of the building. There's some kind of cover on the glass so that while its being pushed out you can't see through it, but when they take it away you are right over the road! It's pretty cool to watch the cars driving around beneath you! We had to work special socks over our shoes so we couldn't scratch the glass! We weren't allowed bring in any cameras or bags or anything. They took photos of us and the socks look pretty ridiculous! In the photos also the other people in the box come out in the reflection which is a pretty big flaw! Needless to say we didn't buy it anyway!
It was late by the time we had finished looking at all the view on the tower but we went to Federation square and had some dinner in the only restaurant that was still open- it was a nice Asian place. After that we went back to Laura's house and sat chatting and drank a bottle of wine with Jamie who had had to work today!
