Sitting around yesterday waiting to move in made me really anxious to do something today, so I made my way into town, not really sure what I was going to do, until I decided to do another of the walks from the tourist information centre. I hadn't got the leaflet on me, so went to Flinder's Square to pick another one up. This one was an 'arcades and lanes' walk, and it took me up lots of cool streets with interesting looking cafes. They were very narrow and some of the cafes were tiny- it kind of reminded me of some of the bazaars in India. There was a shop that sold prints of artwork, that if I had the money and backpack space I would have loved to have brought art from called signed and numbered. It was the sort of walk that you were supposed to lengthen out by enjoying coffee and eating in the restaurants and cafes along the way, so when I spotted a restaurant that sold Kilpatrick Oysters, I decided to try them (since I have wanted to try them ever since I found out what they were). Since I have only ever eaten 1 oyster before, and couldn't remember what they tasted like, I didn't really quite get the hype, since they tasted a bit like a pretentious mussel (not that they tasted pretentious, but just that eating them is more pretentious). I texted Alice because I am now living in a mansion and I was dining on oysters. On the menu they also had Peking duck risotto, which I thought sounded interesting and made a note of the fact it had peas, hoi sin sauce and fried shallots so that I could try and make it some time.
A hotel that's right opposite Flinders' Street Station, and so one that I have walked passed so many times before, was mentioned in the walk as being famous for having a picture called 'Chloe' which shocked conservative Melbourne because it's of a naked lady.
I made my way into Balaclava, so I could use the internet in the library, and when I was about to leave, the heavens opened, so I started to read a Thai cookery book until it calmed down a bit. I stopped by Coles, and then headed to the Caulfield North house, where I got caught in the rain again, and turned up looking a bit bedraggled and lost (because I couldn't remember exactly where it was) although I saw Florien on his way back so that was good. Mia, Lea, Magali, Olivier, Romain and Clem were watching the remake of 'Living Dead' which was gruesome but quite funny because Clem kept chuckling at all the ridiculous scenes.
Alice, Anthony, Joffrey, Victoria and Flo came over later on, and then we had a BBQ (which was a bit weird given that it was so cold- it was sunny this morning so I had on a playsuit so I had to borrow Romain's trackies and Clem's socks) of sausages, chicken wings, pork kebabs, steak, nachos and a really nice baguette from Coles.
