Well we've completed a whole week apart! Lots of texts from ken but I can't seem to get mine sent nor can I call his mobile but can call home phones. He's cold!!!
Tomorrow is the start of term 1 so I shall start being busy. Tomorrow my first solo trip will be in a boat like this going to Raikos School. A banana boat has been hired for me and so we, Marshall who is an office support for Education and who used to go out ith us in our boat] and I will leave the VSO jetty hopefully at 8am and we will return that afternoon.
This school was closed most to last year and so the new Grade 10s have to make up the time lost as they can't resit as there is a new intake at Grade 9.My job will be to work with teachers to show wherethere is an overlap in the syllabus [and there are loads!!] However, they are 10 teachers down making only 5 on site. The school is so run down and been mismanaged that there are no toilets for the boys [this is a boarding school] and one toilet for 100 girls! So quite a challenge and I wish Ken was here to help!
The good point is that the new head we know very well and already he has been round to the house to talk [very un PNG, man - meri] but it was on the verandah!! he's a lovely man, small but I think he'll be great. He used to teach there sois well repected by the community, VERY important and already the community have tried to get the girls' dorm up to scratch and this weekend they were to dig pit toilets.
Rotary has had 11 computers stored for them so another job will be to see if they have a secure room for them. If they have the PCs can go over which will be great. I've also been given a box of books from Rotary and novels for the staff!!
Again from Rotary. So hopefully I will be able to tellyou all about it with some photos by Tuesday.
After Raikos visit I have to work on the HIV/AIDS workshop which we are running for three days to enable schools to send three teachers on different days!
Last week we met with the Privincial Advisers for the first time to discuss this year. Bit of a year late!!! There are now only two Education volunteers! Ben doing Primary and me Secondary [secondary did have 6 this time last year when we arrived!!] At one point one fellow asked what they could do to make me stay! My response was 'that is up to man bilong me long ples bilong mi".
