Our colleague Fiona, a real live Threatre Director *of reknown agreed to come with us to Good Shepherd School where she ran a session for an hour and a half with a groupd of Grade 9 students. Initially we were told that the group was 23 in total, three of which were girls. However, I counted at one time 31 students, five were girls. After a warm up session they split into three groups and had to discuss an old story that they could tell and one member told it. All this was in Tok Pisin so I didn't follow much partly as I couldn't hear them too well. Fiona was brilliant in a mixture of Tok Pisin and English which the students enjoyed. They have lessons in English which they have only studied for a couple of years.
After telling the three stories they then had to perform them and each person had to have a role. Interesting to see how the girls kept quiet and slightly outside to groups. They were really imaginative.
Fiona then ran a session on what would happen over the next few weeks. They brainstormed Social issues that affect them [the syllabus to be covered] and they will perform in front of the rest of the school!
The staff in the school are fascinated and I reckon would join in if they could!
After this teaching session Ken and I ran the second Inservice training for the staff.
*Fiona has directed many plays in the West End and is here as a volunteer with the HIV/AIDS group. She trains local actors to perform an HIV/AIDS awareness play in remote places in the country.
