Morning all from PNG! Friday here at last. Seems to have been a very full week. Sunday we found a different Church to go to. Quite near home. About 60 people in a makeshift Church whilst they wait for planning permission to build a new one in the same compound. Very friendly people and the young lady next to me was very helpful. Again Ken sat one side and me the other. The two services were in Tok Pisin and the Minister spoke extremely quickly! However the hymns were mainly familiar, Onward Christian Soldiers for example so knew the tune and as the language is very phonic based could join in!! Certainly this is where we'll go on a regular basis.
This week has been quite full one way or another. I helped at an Elementary School training session for three days which was great. Teacher's sitting on the floor making Big books for their classes as resources are none existant and getting really stuck in was brilliant. I also made six loaves of bread into sandwiches for them as well mind you! Can they eat!!!!
Ken and I also drove out to visit one of our schools, Good Shepherd. It's about 30 minutes out of Madang. The road is OK as long as you miss the large potholes! What a welcome they gave us. Chatted to the Head and the Inservice [training] co-ordinator, Ester and arranged what courses we might do. we start with the first one next week on "How children learn".
We also completed the task for getting PNG driving licences! Now that is a real accomplishment I can tell you. Two weekes ago we started the process. We had to take both parts of our British licence to the traffic police office. Stood in the queue and then they closed as they had an important meeting! Half an hour later, meeting over they recommenced. They ended up insisting that we had a Group 6 licence even though we told them we wouldn't be driving a vehicle with more than 4 passengers so now we can take 10!! Then we had to go to another office to pay! Arrived there to be told the receipt book had finished and they were waiting for a new one! So we called back on Tuesday to find that it was lunch break so closed. Returned to find that the lady had gone to the Bank! By this time Ken wanted to leave and return another day as we were standing in the full sun, and it is hot here!! We stayed and paid, had our photos taken and within minutes had our plastic licences!!
We've also sorted out our bank cards, called a kundu card, just like a debit card. That's when we discovered that our salaries had been paid into our account!! We have a joint account and both took cash out to test the system to find that as the first name [Una that is] I got charged interest and Ken didn't!! The card is great as you can use in the supermarket and yes, can get cash back as well!
This weekend is a Rotary fund raiser so Ken is helping and then we're at the BBQ that evening. Next week drive to St Michael's School in a place called Braham which is in the hills but not quite the highlands so that will be interesting.
More shortly.............................BUT do look at the photos as they took ages to get on the system!!!!
