Day 18 Saturday 12 May.
21 kms 185 up 235 down
Not the rain that was predicted a high of 14 low single digits
Set of around seven thirty. Got some good shots of the Cathedral with nobody around. Had a coffee at Bonfin in the square then headed out.
Lots of lovely countryside once through Burgos again the satellite suburb of Villabilla de Burgos. All the streets laid out with street lights road signs etc but no buildings. Just as it was three years ago.
I am not trying to repeat the stops or refugees that I went to three years ago but am surprised how often we find ourselves in the same.
I visited a sweet little church today on The outskirts of Rabe de Los Calzadas. I left a few tears and was given a tiny St Christopher’s medal. Next I saw a very innovative fence made entirely of pellets and binder twine. I thought you might appreciate that John.
The cover photo I took of myself looking very like a famous and intrepid NZer. Can you guess which?
The stockiness of the silhouette is entirely due to the height of the sun at midday.
The walk passed through some unusual geological formations. I got talking to Virginia Hall a pilgrim from The States. Limestone is being developed into grass growing pastures but no stock except for those behind the pellet fence. The fields have no fences and shepherds and their dogs just keep the sheep in the right place even when they graze alongside lush grain fields. Training is all.
There was a strong cold headwind but the sun came out about ten and stayed all day. Dad said same temperatures as Invercargill.
We ate soup and cheese, tomatoes, lemon tea, raw carrots and ginger biscuits and chocolate for dinner. I also drank two glasses of wine a litre of water and 250ml of lemon. On top of the 700ml water I drank when I arrived I think that takes care of the hydration and all the food groups. Off to bed now.
