¡Buenas dias! Day 34- 18k, Ponferrada to Pieros, nice sunny day. Early part of the walk on my own - taking pics of poppies mostly - heaps of them everywhere. Spent the remainder talking to a retired French Judge - name of Giles (pronounced Sheels!) He was the same age as me, born, bred on Corsica (same as Napoleon), lives in southern Spain during winter (too cold in Corsica) We talked about rugby, Tahiti (he dodged the nuclear bullet), the French legal system, what 40 years of dealing with criminals does to your mind, how he prefers walking to the law, that the Britsh system of appointing experienced lawyers to the job of Judge was much better than the French, where they train to be a judge immediately after they have qualified as a lawyer. He reckons he was too young at the start. Anyway I ended up with an invite to walk with him in Corsica! Eventually we arrived in Pieros to see the sign in the pic attached - turned out our friend Claire from Tauranga is working here as a volunteer for a week or so - and she knew from others that we were coming!! We felt like we were famous- everybody here ie like the middle of no where in Spain, was expecting us! We still got chucked into a room with 48 other sweaty pilgrims so the famous bit didn't last long. Hasta luego!
