¡Hola! Day 11 - Navarrete to Nájera 16k, 583 to go. Weather perfect for walking - fine, warm (T-shirt), through rolling wine country. La Rioja is famous for its red wine. They seem to prune the vines down to couple of sticks that look like they would never grow again ( see pic - also if you expand photo you will see snow on the hills behind - that's why it is still pretty cold). Started walking at 8am - 1st thing I saw was a stork in its nest on top of a big chimney - very cool bird. I would love to have them in NZ - having one build a nest on your chimney would be a huge compliment. The miles just rolled by - not too much foot soreness today and then we were there - midday, eating tapas and drinking cafe americano. Went to the local museum - interesting, seems like Neanderthals lived locally back in the day. Then found an Albergue Municipal, got a bed, had the shower, siesta, then out to the lounge for a long conversation in Spanish with a couple of locals - abuelos (grandparents) like us, swapped photos etc of las nietas ( grandchildren) and worked on our Spanish for more than 1/2hr. It was great. Now we are in the local pub with about 50 locals (men) who are all playing cards and shouting at the top of their voices - mucha energia!! Still going well - learning the value of a good sleep! Hasta mañana.

Despina Arathimos Wow, I've just been reading your most recent entries! So impressed with what you're doing and can't imagine having the stamina to do it. Your Spanish is obviously getting better by the day. Really looking forward to future posts from you.
jeffandsal Hi Despina - thanks for the note. The Spanish is coming along OK - fits and starts though and still get easily lost when they talk fast. You'll be pleased with our church attendance though - 7th mass in 12 days - seems like I've got a lot of sin to unload and the priests speak beautiful slow Spanish - plus the churches have spectacular acoustics.
