JOHNSTON CANYON
So 2day was the day of my canyon walk. After a sleepless night (both my room mate and i have really bad coughs) it was time to head out and catch my ride. There were even less people than last week on the tour, me, another older lady from philidelphia and the guide made 3!!! Was good though, very intimate lol. So it took us about half an hours drive to get there and on the way the guide gave us a talk about the local geology and some background to banff. I'm becoming quite an expert on banffs history!! We were the only ones there when we arrived which was cool, wasnt really up for competing with bundles of tourists. We had to wear these really cool spikes under our shoes so we cld grip the snowy ice easily cause was quite slippery (on the way bk we saw a woman in HEELS....CRAZY)
It was about a half hrs through the lower part of the canyon to reach lower falls. We had to walk on steel walkaways attached to the canyons edge was so cool!! we were quite high up though so bit scary too when looking down! The lower falls were amazing!! the water was falling behind a sheet of ice so u cldnt see it properly but u cld hear it! there was a small cave to climb through and u got a much better view! was amazing!! quite hard to describe!
it was then about another 45min walk through the forest to the upper canyon was quite a climb!! was well worth it though. i have never seen anything like it! was HUGE!!! hanging dwn from the canyon roof were massive icicles that looked blue cause of the light was so impressive!! ice climbers apparently climb up the frozen wall. we passed a couple on the way back would have been cool to see them do it. personally i think they're crazy lol!! we got yummy hot chocolate and maple cookies at the upper falls which filled a hole. i think i'm falling in live with maple cookies...mite have to buy some at the grocery store 2day!
well thats this weeks adventure over now i need to figure out what to do next week!
