Mt Augustus is the biggest rock in Australia. Bigger than Ayers Rock/Uluru. I think the main difference in the notoriety between the two is that Mt Augustus has more vegetation on it and Uluru is just rock (can't speak from experience as we haven't been to Uluru). From Carnarvon we headed inland to the Kennedy Ranges National Park stopping at Gascoyne Junction for lunch on the way. We had planned to stay just outside of town by the beach but we could not find the right turn off so we ended up at a caravan park about 4kms out of town. After leaving Point Samson we headed to the historic port town of Cossack. There are still a few buildings left and there is a heritage trail you can follow around the town becoming informed on its history as you go. It would have been a very pretty coastal town in its day.
