Mt Augustus is the biggest rock in Australia. Bigger than Ayers Rock/Uluru. I think the main difference in the notoriety between the two is that Mt Augustus has more vegetation on it and Uluru is just rock (can't speak from experience as we haven't been to Uluru).
The resort/campground we stayed at was about 10kms from the base of the Mount. We walked to the summit of the mountain for a great view. The walk was 12km return and was pretty good except for a 1.5km section which was really steep so took a while to get both up and down.
We celebrated our walk with a few beers in the bar at the resort. We were having a good time with Foxtel on the TV in the background, whilst chatting to a couple of English backpackers who were working at the resort. We ended up skipping dinner and just drinking and chatting. Around 8ish the owners came in and we were chatting with them as well when things got a bit heated and the owner, Finn, got quite animated when having a heated discussion with David on the professionalisation of sport. This was all good - a normal occurrence often seen around the Martin family dinner table, until Finn decided it was time for us to leave and kept telling us to go.
Ah well, I was pretty full of beer by then anyway which accounts for the hangover I woke up with this morning!
