Caught tube from Lancaster Gate station to Liverpool Street station at 9am then caught Great Eastern train service to Southend Victoria station (1 hour, £9.50 each). Walked up Victoria Avenue to Roots Hall, the home ground of Southend United Football Club.
Walked through car park which was crowded with the local market and made our way to reception. Our guide for the tour, Jon, took us for a tour through the clubrooms including the changerooms, offices, medical rooms and boot room before we went out onto the ground for some photos and video. Jon then took a picture of us for the official club website.
Tour was great and we were given a bag of merchandise including match programs, badges and a signed shirt. Jon then took us out to the market to show us where we could buy some cheap food and drink.
After stocking up with cheap water, fruit and chocolate we thanked Jon for his efforts and went to the club shop to buy some more merchandise. We then walked back to the train station, stopping at Victoria Plaza Shopping Centre for lunch. We ate Victoria Cafe which had cheap burgers.
Decided to walk to waterfront not realising how far it was. After 15 minutes walking and still 3km away we gave up and walked back to the train station. Caught the train back to Liverpool Street station, then the tube back to Lancaster Gate station arriving at 4pm.
