Caught taxi from London hotel to Marble Arch to pick up our hire carat 9:30am. After paying for all the hidden extras after we had prepaid before we left we got our car, a Peugot 406...very nic ! We drove up the A40(M) to Stratford-upon-Avon arriving around 12:30pm. Stumbled upon our B&B after getting lost due to a severe lack of street signs in the town.
Found the car park for the B&B only to find out the toilet in our room was broken and we were being shipped over the road to another B&B but we could leave our car in their car park! So instead of staying at Aidan Guesthouse we stayed at Minola Guesthouse in Evesham Place.
Settled into room, then started our whirlwind tour of Stratford-upon-Avon. Started at Hall's Croft, the house of Stratford's doctor from mid 17th century. Displays of old furniture and medical instruments from that period in a half-timbered house. Also a large garden out the back which you can look around.
Continued walking along the river Avon past Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Southern Lane, stopping for lunch at McDonalds! Walked along Bridge Street to Henley Street and the Shakespeare Centre and Shakespeare's Birthplace. Similar to Hall's Croft except a display on Shakespeare's life as opposed to medical instrument display.
Walked back down Henley Street to High Street then onto Chapel Street to Nash's House and The New Place. Similar again but with a display on settlement in the area since prehistoric times. Walked back along Scholars Lane to Rother Street, then onto a walking track to Shottery and Anne Hathaway's Cottage. Walk took about 10 minutes each way and it was again similar to the other properties with displays of how the house would have been furnished in Shakespeare's time. Guide for the tour was good, pointing out the way things worked in the 14th century and the source of many of the sayings we use today. Walked back to B&B then set out for dinner at 6pm. Ate at Pasta Cafe in Sheep Street.
