Got up at 8am and had breakfast before walking to Termini underground station to buy a day pass for the underground.
Caught the metro in a ridiculously crowded train to Ottaviano station then walked for 5 minutes to Vatican City. Took some pictures of St.Peter's Basilica and St.Peter's Square.
Decided to join the queue of people to go to the top of the cupola of St.Peter's Basilica. Half of the trip was by lift, the rest by stairs (320 of them!) some of which were very narrow and you had to lean as the curved walls of the cupola made standing up straight impossible.
Very crowded at the top but still managed to take in the excellent views of Vatican City and Rome. Walked around to the Vatican Museums. Good collection of museums which had lots to see from Egyptian, Roman and Greek artefacts and the expected religious displays. Lots of old painted cathedrals and chapels including the famous Sistine Chapel. Unfortunately you could not take any pictures in the Sistine Chapel.
We walked back to the metro station and caught another crowded train to Barberini station to check our email.
