Happiness Is The Road
It was our final full day in Perth today. We just chilled around the apartment in the morning and then went out around 2pm. It was ******* it down with rain and the city skyline was shrouded in cloud and mist. We really hoped that the rain would clear later as we wanted to spend our final night in Perth sat under the big magical tree in Kings Park watching the sun go down and the city light up. It was that fine drizzly rain that soaks you through so we walked just a couple of blocks and then got one of the free CAT buses to the city centre. When we emerged from the bus onto the main shopping street the rain was thankfully easing. We went to the post office, changed some currency for New Zealand and bought a new memory card for our camera. We have taken thousands upon thousands of photos in Australia and I think that there will be thousands more to come in NZ. After this we went to Woolworths to get some food for our picnic tea. By now the rain had stopped which was great and we walked up to the park. We took in the spectacular view of the city, sat down under the big tree and waited for night to fall over the beautiful city of Perth with our headphones on. This is the third time I have sat here and listened to music and it is the second time for Jay. As it was our last night in Perth and our penultimate night in Australia it was only right that we listened to the following three songs:- Down Under by Men At Work, Great Southern Land by Icehouse and Sounds Of Then (This Is Australia) by Ganggajang. A triple pack of awesome Aussie songs. We had our picnic and watched the lights of the city come on. We felt quite weird and sad to be leaving Perth as we have spent so much time here and we feel quite at home in Perth. Not only was the city saying goodbye to us tonight, the mozzies were as well! They were out in force and it seemed that they just couldn't resist feeding on us one more time. We fled the park with a good collection of bites that were already itching like crazy. We walked back to the city and soaked up the chilled and vibrant atmosphere. Perth has a really lovely welcoming and homely feel to it. On our way to the Busport we were waiting to cross the road when some elderly gentlemen also at the crossing spontaneously started singing in Barbershop style the Danny Williams classic 'Moon River'.What a beautiful and surreal way to leave Perth city. The bus took us most of the way back to the apartment where 'Alf' was in fine fettle and intent on treating us to a good old cockney medley of shouts, bawls and odd hollering. It's a strange world. We set our alarm for 5am. We have a taxi to catch to the airport tomorrow.
"Out on the patio we sit,
And the humidity we breathe,
We watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia."
