Happiness Is The Road
Hellooooooooooooooooooooooooooo possums. Welcome to day 5 of the blog. Still in Perth for a few more days until I pick up the camper and hit the road! I'm being picked up outside my apartment by Caroline's mum, Di at 12. Before that nipped into the city to find out about mobile internet wifi dongles as will need internet and wifi to connect all my devices when on the road. First of all went to Vodafone. The guy there ran through their pocket wifi device with me but credit to him, when I explained that I would be out of the cities for most of my trip, he advised that Telstra had far better coverage in rural areas and I should check them out. This I did and as there isn't much price difference I opted to go for the one from Telstra. I have to go back to get it on Monday. After a coffee I wandered back to my apartment to get picked up by Di. If you want an Americano you have to order a Long Black Coffee here. There's so may different words here for things. Di was running a little bit late but picked me up at about quarter past. It was really lovely to see her as the last time I saw her was probably about 17 years ago. She asked me where I'd like to go and I suggested the coast as I'd not yet seen the beautiful Indian Ocean. Perth is blessed with absolutely miles of beautiful suburban coastline. Clean white sand and a brilliant blue sea. Beautiful weather today with a completely clear blue sky and 29 degrees. Di drove out through the city first past Subiaco which has changed dramatically and then onto the beach suburbs of Cottesloe, City Beach, Scarborough, North Beach and Sorrento. It's as good as I remembered it. We stopped at Burns Beach and had some lunch there. I had beer battered Barramundi, chips and salad which was terrific washed down with a Long Black Coffee. Di is absolutely lovely and very easy to talk to. We had a wonderful chat about Perth,Australia, Caroline and the doom and gloom of the UK. After that we went to Mindarie Keys where there is so much money and lots of ostentatious houses. Perth and Western Australia has a lot of wealth from mining and the rich ones all seem to live in the northern beach suburbs. The Perth metropolitan area has grown massively in the last 20 years with the population increasing from 1 million to about 1.6 million now. Then we went down to Fremantle and had a look at the harbour and drove out to the campsite where I'll probably be staying in a few nights time. Also checked out where the Little Creatures brew pub was for future reference! We then drove back through the upmarket lovely suburbs fringing the Swan River and then I was dropped off back in Northbridge. Thankyou Di for taking the time for showing me around and for a really lovely day. I have borrowed a map book of WA from Di and will return it to her in a years time when the campervan has trundled all the way round and back to Perth! The evening was spent trying to sort out a problem with the s**t RBS back home, it's a long story! Nite nite till tomorrow.
