Happiness Is The Road
Despite all the noise last night I woke up unbelievably excited to be driving into Perth and completing the full circle of this incredible country. Jay was also very excited as she has never been to Perth before. After brekky with the nice ducks we hit the road. The weather was beautiful, very calm with a perfect blue sky. It was a bit cold so for the first part of the journey we had the heating on full blast in the camper. We were arriving in Perth in the middle of winter, a season I have not experienced in Perth before. We had 99 kilometres to go to complete the circle. The drive took us along the Indian Ocean Drive and down to the outer edge of Perth's northern suburbs. Soon after we reached the beginning of the Mitchell Freeway that would take us all the way into the city. I remember back on the 30th October last year driving south out of Perth's suburbs on the Kwinana Freeway thinking that when I get back to Perth I will be coming in on the Mitchell Freeway having gone round the whole of this impossibly huge country. That day seemed to be an incredibly long way away but here I was actually on the Mitchell Freeway about to close the circle. The closer I got to the city centre the more emotional I became and when I saw the dramatic Perth city skyline rise up from the freeway I had a lump in my throat and a few tears in my eyes. I felt happy, exhilarated and very emotional. We came off the Mitchell Freeway at the Wellington Street exit and right into the heart of the city. I wanted our entrance into Perth to be as dramatic and impressive as possible for Jay so I drove up to Kings Park from where we could get a panoramic view of my favourite Australian city. We pulled up into the car park and I made a note of what the odometer displayed. I worked out that since I picked up the camper van I had driven 33,808 kilometres which is the equivalent of 21,007 miles. Basically a bloody long way! To give you an idea as to how big this country is and how far I have driven the distance between Manchester, England and Perth, Australia is 14,611 kilometres or 9,079 miles. That means I have driven further than the distance between Manchester to Perth and back! A phenomenal distance!! It took 249 days of travelling to complete the full circle. Jay and I have seen more of this country than the vast majority of Australians having been to every State/Territory and their capital cities. It is only when you're on the ground driving that you can properly get a handle on what a staggeringly huge country Australia is. The first thing I wanted to do was to take Jay to see the view from the park across to the city so we hurried over there both of us deliriously happy. The view of the city skyline was breathtaking. We got loads of photos of us with the city looking spectacular behind us. Then we went to sit on the grass and I spread our big map of Australia out on the grass. We traced on the map all the places we had been to and the enormity of what we've done properly sank in. It has been my dream for years to come to Australia and drive all the way round in a camper van. That dream was fulfilled today and it felt absolutely brilliant. Although the full circle is now complete our adventures in Australia are not over yet. We are staying in Australia until October when we are going to New Zealand for three months. During this time I am going to revisit the south west of WA with Jay as she missed out on what I think is the best and most beautiful part of the country. As it is now winter I reckon that the incredible scenery of the south west will be even more rugged, dramatic and awe inspiring than when I was last there back in November. For the next couple of weeks though we are going to chill out and relax in Perth as we need a break from all the big drives. We had some lunch at the cafe in Kings Park where we were visited by a kookaburra before we headed out into Perth's suburbs to the shopping centre at Karrinyup to get some food. The temperature was now about 20 degrees and it was lovely and warm. Fantastic considering it's winter. After shopping we went to the Karrinyup Waters Resort where we hope to stay for a few nights. We got a great spot and it was lovely and quiet. We really hoped that it would stay this way. The only noise was from the cute ducks who visited us and said hi not long after we arrived. I went to sleep very happy and content to be back in Perth. It felt like a sort of homecoming but then anywhere I am with Jay is home.
