Happiness Is The Road
Got up to a clear blue sky this morning. You could tell that a storm had come through as there were a lot of branches off trees. Whilst I was doing my dishes I noticed that the emus had come onto the camp site! There was what I presumed to be mummy emu and her four youngsters. I got talking to the couple from the caravan next door. They were from Brisbane and were taking 3 months out to circumnavigate the country with their kids. I was informed that the big emu was the daddy. Apparently the mother gives birth, but it is the father who looks after the kids. Mummy emu must have been at home relaxing somewhere whilst daddy emu took the kids out for a walk! It was absolutely wonderful to see emus this close up. They are scruffy but very fascinating birds. I watched them for about 20 minutes or so just mooch around the camp site. There was a really funny picture at the camp site above the urinal in the gents. I have posted the picture for you to see. It is of a rather disgruntled sheep saying :-
"No come on here ace....seriously.....
Your planning to do what to me
with that thing.
And no I don't mean the
fu*cking hand piece!!!!! (the electronic prod)
I hit the highway at about half 9. I had about 420 kilometres to cover today to Madura. I stopped an hour down the road at the Balladonia road house for fuel. Not too long after that I saw the sign for the 90 mile straight. At 145 kilometres this is the longest stretch of completely straight road in Australia. I had my Aussie music soundtrack playing to keep me entertained. Not many vehicles came the other way. You do have to watch out for the mammoth road trains though, American style tractor units pulling 3 long trailers. They are beasts! This I was told was one of the most desolate parts of the crossing, although it's not the Nullarbor proper yet as there are still trees. I stopped to make lunch at the Caiguna road house and was joined by a load of cheeky birds who were after crumbs. After that the next section of the road seemed to be the worst bit for road kill. This was kangaroo death alley. There were loads of the poor things at the side of the road. Some obviously freshly hit and others rotting and some just skeletons. It's a real shame that their playground is cut in two by the highway and they just hop on oblivious to the danger. Caiguna is also where you enter Central Western Time. At the moment this is 45 minutes ahead of Perth and 1 hour 45 minutes behind Adelaide. The time will be advanced again tomorrow when I reach the Western Australia/South Australia border near Eucla. I couldn't be bothered changing my clocks though now. I'll put them all forward when I reach the state border tomorrow. I stopped for more fuel at the Cocklebiddy road house. I think it's best to keep the tank topped up. I got to Madura at about 3 checked into the camp site. It was nice and spacious and shaded among the trees. I just spent the rest of the day eating, reading and blogging. Went to bed at about 9. There's still loads more highway to cover tomorrow and the day after. Nite nite.
