Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we went into the city. We caught the bus to Stirling Station and got the train from there. The weather was gorgeous today and it was great to be back in the city. For a big city Perth has a really chilled vibe. The first thing we needed to do was find an outdoor shop as Jay needed some new walking boots. I am very proud of Jay as through my encouragement she now really enjoys going on long walks and hiking. She walks up steep hills now without gasping for breath and now even chooses to walk up stairs instead of taking escalators! She has lost heaps of weight as well. Partly due to the increased exercise but mainly due to cutting cane sugar out of her diet permanently. Neither of us eat cane sugar now. We eat a healthy natural diet and with our bodies free of the toxins found in refined sugar we feel great. We got Jay some new boots and to break them in we decided to go on a walk around the Swan River. We walked through the city towards where the freeway crosses the river. Here we discovered a really beautiful park that I had never seen before. It was great to discover this little oasis. There were ponds here with lots of birdlife and we sat and ate our sandwiches here. We then discovered a big slide and some swings. As there was absolutely nobody else here we couldn't resist and played for a while. We felt like children sliding and swinging and playing and laughing! One of the great things about this trip is the freedom we have to be ourselves and to be silly and play. We are free of the pressures of 'normal' life and exist in the now which is the best place to be. Happiness is the road. From the park we took the path across the bridge alongside the freeway. The river narrows where the bridge is but widens out massively on both sides. We walked along side the river through South Perth and admired the view across the water to the city. We dodged some aggressive looking black swans here and saw another of those cute and fluffy Pied Cormorants. To get back to the city centre we caught the public ferry that goes across the big expansive river to Barrack Street Jetty where the Bell Tower is. We had a walk along the river on this side for a while and watched the pelicans and a really funny and fluffy Pied Cormorant trying to swallow a big fish that it had caught. It was hilarious to watch. It just couldn't swallow the thing and was desperately trying to get out of the water so it could have a better go but the side of the river was far too slippery and it just couldn't get out. It kept slipping back into the water and losing the fish. With a look of extreme exasperation on it's face it eventually gave up and the fish, with much relief we assume, slipped away to live another day. We saw a sign up on one of the buildings nearby that said 'Does the Fremantle Doctor actually cure anything?' The answer I think is yes as it probably cures and soothes a lot of bad tempered behaviour in the summer when the temperature here is usually well over 30 degrees every day. The Fremantle Doctor is the name for a cooling afternoon sea breeze that occurs during summer months consistently blowing from the direction of Fremantle in the south west between the hours of noon and three. The wind brings welcome relief and thus cools strops and bad tempered heads. With Jay's new boots now worn in enough for one day we headed back to the station and caught the train and bus combo back to the caravan park.
