After a good breakfast and a chat with a couple from Burnley in England who were staying at the B&B we walked to the tourist information centre. Bought a few souvenirs and then went to Inverness Castle. The castle is now used as a courthouse but they had a re-enactment type show that started at 10.30am. We were a bit early so decided to give it a miss and admire the views of Inverness from the castle.
Walked back to the B&B to pick up our car and drove out to Culloden Battlefield. After a look at the video presentation and museum we went out for a re-enactment in a hut still on the site before walking around the moor where the battle took place. Despite the insistence that the moor is exactly as it was the day of the battle due to the eating habits of the goats in the field it was plain to see the bushes had grown a little!! The final sight was the burial mounts of the highlanders that died in the battle, all buried under the name of their clan.
Drove on a few miles further to Clava Cairns. A collection of prehistoric stone burial mounds in a field surrounded by stone circles. Interesting to walk around and the location in a peaceful field is amazing.
Continued on to Fort George, an 18th century fort built after the battle at Culloden to keep the highlanders in check. Still in use today so you wander around as soldiers go about their business. Some historic buildings and a museum but mainly some great views from the ramparts.
Back to the B&B for a rest and then out to dinner at Deep Pan Pizza which was a bit expensive for what you got !
