Shell's Birthday !!
After breakfast at the hotel we caught the bus to Princes Street in the city. Walked down to tourist information for a city map then went to nearby internet cafe to send and read some emails. We switched seats so Shell could type an email and were told quite abruptly by the owner that we'd have to pay an extra 80p if Shell typed...we swapped back and they didn't get their 80p!!
Walked further to Palace of Holyroodhouse. Toured through the palace which included a look at Mary, Queen of Scots bedroom amongst other things. Had a quick look at the ruins of Holyrood Abbey which adjoined the palace.
Caught the bus back up the hill then walked down the Royal Mile towards Edinburgh Castle. Stopped
for a coffee on the way to the castle and also called in to Gladstone's Land, a 14th century house which was OK but nothing spectacular inside.
Arrived at Edinburgh Castle and wandered around taking in the excellent views of the city and the historic buildings inside. Two thirds of the way through the tour it began to rain on the first day we decided to leave the rain jackets at the hotel. We managed to get around and see as much as we could huddled under a single umbrella!
Walked back down Princes Street and caught the bus back to the hotel. Rain continued all afternoon and we heard on the news that flooding was causing problems in Inverness, our next destination. Called ahead to our B&B in Inverness to make sure we could get there. We were told it was no problem!
Went todinner at 6pm and ate at MaPotters Chargrill at Ocean Terminal. Food was good and prices not too bad. Another coffee at Starbucks and then back to hotel.
