Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
Had such an amazing night on Saturday. Aman and I met with Winnie, an ex deaf student from SMK DPM and she introduced us to 2 of her friends. At first I found it a bit daunting being the only hearing person and not having a much of a scooby how to use sign language but I quickly began to pick it up and anything I was unsure of, we wrote down on paper. Thankfully their English was really good so we could understand each other fine. After a remarkably good meal at a local restaurant, one of Winnie's friends drove us to their regular "hangout". Was like a big café and we were introduced to about 25 of their friends. About 3 were hearing, one hard of hearing, where as the rest were deaf. We split up so we could get a chance to meet everyone and I befriended a set of twins- Joelle and Jolene. I discovered that most of them became friends through attending the same college and some had gone to the same school. There was a couple with a gorgeous toddler, who were both really friendly. Winnie asked Aman and I to introduce ourselves, and then we spent the evening just getting to know everyone and having a major crash course in Malaysian and American Sign Language (as they mix the 2).
They were interested in my family, what I'm studying, where I've traveled- everything really. They were so so nice and was just crazy to find myself signing quite a lot by the end of the night. I've decided learning sign from a book is pants. If I was immersed in the deaf community and spent my time signing to everyone more often, I would pick it up in no time. I love it how, even if they don't know English, we can still communicate through sign and they can understand me more so than a hearing Malaysian would.
It made me think I wish I could work with the deaf children more often. I will def make a huge effort to help out when I can though and I'm really looking forward to running the deaf camp with Aman.
Some of the deaf guys took the pee when I tried to describe things in sign but they were really helpful when I got it wrong.
Also had an amaaazin chocolate milkshake that night, which topped it off! Got the mob no's of a few of the girls and they asked to meet again on Sunday, but Aman and I had to head back to the school. We're def meeting back up on Friday though to go to the YMCA- not actually sure what we're doing there, but sure it'll be banter.
On Sunday, Aman and I gave into temptation and went to Little Italy for another kinda pricey meal. We decided that if we were gona end up eating there loads, we might as well get a discount. So we asked and they actually gave us a 15% discount card, which is fab. Also found an amazing Chinese restaurant next to the North Borneo Cabin, which we will def be going to in the future- looks like it serves typical Chinese take away food like in the U.K- mmmm.
We took a look round the shopping malls in KK that we haven't visited yet and we both got a little hot and bothered in the sweltering heat, since the mall was such a long walk away. Ended up buying a watch- at last and some essentials for our fridge before we headed back to the school in the legend Mr Soo's taxi.
Had dinner in Rakeema's hostel flat last night, with Liya and another young teacher. We watched Malaysia's version of the Eurovision Song Contest. Was highly amusing- the competitors were already famous but they seriously sucked!! But Liya seemed to love them! Rakeema said that her cousin is getting married soon and that when she does, we can come to the wedding- I was like SCORE!!! I've been dying to go to a Malaysian wedding since I got here! I've seen some pics and the outfits are crazy-like really intricately designed. We told them that we also really wana see some local tribes, so we persuaded Liya to come with us to Kudat (2 hrs drive away) to visit the tribes there since she knows some people from Kudat. So we should hopefully be going next weekend.
They also invited us to the hostel students "Dinner Party" this Saturday night- can't wait!! There's gona be karaoke!! It's being held in the school hall and should be banter.
Meeza, Joyce and Aubry raided out room again last night until the early hours of the morning, and were chuffed over the sweets we bought them. We were also joined by a 6 form girl, who I helped to write her huge essay about road accidents in Malaysia. I hate having to say that I'm too tired and ask them to leave, so I ended up letting them stay till about 1.30am so got little sleep last night! They all stayed up all night doing their homework cos none of them did it over the hols. They say they prefer to work together- so they ended up working all night- mental.
