Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
O.K. Take 2. Spent aages last night typing up this entry and the comp crashed! So here we go again! Just to re-cap- I totally forgot to mention that when we arrived in KK and all of the gapers were together for a few days, we got the boat out to one of the tropical islands. Was amaaazin. We went snorkeling and I found Nemo-woo!! Only prob was that there were tons of "stingers" in the water and it was like swimming into a nettle bush. But well worth it! The fish were crazy- huuuge. Some with big blunt teeth and there was see through things that looked like pike but obviously couldn't have been I don't think, but it had majorly sharp teeth. There were mega spiky things on the sea bed that looked like they had neon lights on them- were so cool. Gota buy an underwater camera to show ya'll! Didn't sunbathe much as it was sooo hot and if u wanted to cool down in the water there was the payment of being stung. There was a cool bar and we got Pinacoladas. Also saw a craaazy lizard thing come outa the water- check out the pics.
Anyway! Back to the here and now! Things are getting a teeny bit easier now. We've bought new sheets for our beds, brightened the place up by sticking a map of U.K and my Scotland flag and pics of friends and family on the walls. Thankfully the cockroaches seem to have gone into hiding since Aman sprayed her deodorant everywhere- legend!
We've mostly lazed about for the last day since we still haven't been given anything to do- I begin on Tuesday with the hearing children and Aman starts on Monday with the deaf. So far the plan is to each teach 8.30am-10.30am then 2.30pm-4.30pm each day. I haven't got any formal teaching time with the deaf children yet, however I expressed to the head of the department that I'd really like to help so when I'm not in classes with the hearing kids, I'll come over to the deaf department and help with handy crafts i.e, decorating their classrooms with them etc. The head of the departement also invited Aman and I to meet up with what she called the "working deaf", in KK next Sunday which should be cool.
Johnston (English teacher) helped with getting our shower fixed, got us a toaster and plates and knifes, which are all a huge help. We're actually having a real breakfast now- toast and butter-heaven!
He's asked for us to teach in his English literature classes so he's given Aman and I a book called "The Pearl" to read as Form 5 are studying it at the mo.
Recently discovered we've gota piano in the girl's hostel which I'm sooooo happy about. It's easy to get on cos if we walk in and there's someone playing, they'll jump off straight away cos they're embarrassed, then they'll all ask us to play. Tis a pain sometimes tho cos I don't really like to practice in front of them.
We've also done our first washing load- was quite amusing- had no idea how the washing machines worked so the hostel girls helped us.
That night we chatted to the girls in the dorm next to us. We invited a few of them into our room to look at our pics of home and we gave them some shortbread I brought with me. One girl Meitza (sound like Meesha), has very good English and is so chatty. The girls totally freaked us out tho. They said that they had something to tell us but they couldn't say what it was while it was dark. But after much persuasion, we got it out of them- There's supposedly a headless ghost that haunts the hostel and is after female blood. Aman and I thought, fair enough- kids are bound to come up amusing storied like that but then we discovered that the matron and headmistress took the "incidents" really seriously, resulting in the girls having to all sleep with their lights on and they all have to do weird weird rituals before they go to bed- freaky. The girls and boys dorms were even swapped 2 years ago to try and get rid of the ghost. Meesha said that last year, when an "incident" occurred, they went through to the Gappers rooms to spend the night. So we're thinking- maybe its just a plot to crash in our room- we'll see.
Meesha's originally from South Sabah and kindly filled us in on some local headhunting stories. Supposedly, where she's from, when a bridge is built, 100 heads are collected and put on spears under the bridge to ensure it will stay up. She also said that in 2003, kids from Sabah were kidnapped for their heads and there was a huge hoo ha on the news about it- freaky. Luckily we didn't realize it was Friday 13th when we were chattin about all this- otherwise I woulda majorly freaked out.
Next day, the matron invited us to go to a University with her + we obviously agreed although we had no idea what it was about. Arrived to discover it was an Environmental Awareness competition. Luckily some of the speeches were given in English so we got the jist. And turned out we won- the kids went crazy- was cool. They played "Crazy Frog" full blast to celebrate- they love Crazy Frog here and play "Black Eyed Peas" NON STOP!
After comp, gota lift to KK and met up with other gapers. Aman and I bought some more clothes to work in as they are quite strict on what we wear and we didn't have many suitable things to teach in. Tis crazy here- we can't get anything in our size! You'd think that since Malay women are tiny, they would make small clothes but everything here is huuuge! Couldn't find much anywhere- so we might get some things made for us at the tailors.
Aman also bought a new phone and we grabbed a pizza hut-sooo yummy! Checked into a backpackers- like 3 quid a night including breakfast- legendary. Then met up for drinks at Shenanigans- local western bar. Moved onto "Upperstar"- kinda like KK's mega cheap version of TGI's- but it's more of a bar. Got a some snack's for tea then headed back to the backpackers. Unfortunately Georgie, Ozzie gapper, started hurling her guts up so we're thinking the Upperstar food isa bit dodgie.
Going to the beach today, then to a Chinese dragon dance competition tonight. Hope that's everything covered so far.
So byee for now.
