Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
Had a class focused on music yesterday. Had a quiz, using my ipod- played British tracks and got them to guess the artists and song title, then put a tick or cross as to whether they liked it or not. I put a couple of sly ones in, like Amplifico and Carpe Diem, just to see what they thought of them. Both got the majority of the thumbs up vote!
We then got each group to write their own song. Form 1A made such an effort- they were so so sweet. They all sang, even the boys and some even choreographed their piece. A group of girls wrote a song just for mee- not got it with me, but will put it on the site asap- highly amusin. Form 3A were pretty obnoxious as usual but we got through the class ok.
The school was visited by Chinese Dragon Dancers yesterday and they gave an amazing performance at the front of the school. All of the students stood round in a circle or up on the balcony and watched as these guys in dragon suits did crazy acrobatics and danced. Aman and I were well and truly molested in the crowd. Was our own fault for sitting in the front row! The Dragons wouldn't leave us alone!!
There was also a percussion band- very impressive- with symbols, drums etc. Some of them seemed more interested in looking at Aman and I than actually playing though.
There was a power cut midday yesterday, therefore the fans and air con were broken- the school soon became overwhelmingly sweltering. The heat was unbearable, but luckily the power came back a couple of hours later.
Aman and I went to the supermarket with Rakeema to take out money from the ATM and buy some essentials- i.e. coke and Pringles! Really need to stop relying on junk food here.
Last night Liya , the young teacher that lives with Rakeema, came up to our room for another English lesson. She recently read a novel called "Lover's Lane", so I got her to summarise the book to me and I corrected and noted any mistakes she made. She was pretty much perfect, except for forgetting to use "a" or "the" before words. We asked if she would like to read Dan Brown and she took away "Angels and Demons" to read over the Chinese New Year hols.
I reeally need to get round to reading the Da Vinci Code- but as Aman says, it's better to read it in one go so I think I'm gona leave it for a weekend we spend at one of the islands on the beach.
Last night we also went down to the hall to watch the kids practicing a dance. The girls were using traditional straw cone hats, choreographing traditional dances, while the boys were practicing on huge percussion instruments- drums, special gong things. Will try to find out the proper names.
Today I taught class 1A "Fish fishy fishy" and "Lemonade". They loved it- went a teeny bit crazy, but looked like they were having fun. Some of the girls are so cute- there's one that is just so indescribably smiley. Tis quite amusing but nice2see. The same girl brought her diary to Aman and I at the end of the class and got us to fill out a lil questionnaire she'd written us- i.e., name, bday, fave food+drink, fave memory, family, advice for her, got us to draw a picture- and at the end asked for our autographs! Cuteness! Hoping she'll take note that my fave food is pasta so she'll get me some!
We also had a small debate with the class on animal testing (for the students with better English) and on whether school is good or bad, for the others. They did really well- still got class 3A to teach this afternoon.
Aman and I were given more oranges to celebrate Chinese New Year- the school genuinely smells of oranges now!
We leave for Hong Kong at 8am tomorrow- can't wait! Slight problem is that my left hand has swollen etc again but s'all good- after I've drugged up for a few days I'm sure it'll be fine. Nothing is gona stop me from shopping!!
One of the teachers who recently visited Hong Kong, has advised we go on certain tours and see the night markets. We'll suss everything out when we reach Hong Kong airport cos there's loadsa info on tours etc there.
Will try to get on a comp in Hong Kong to tell you of our adventures over the next week.
