Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
O.K-so we got the date wrong for the Chinese Dragon Dance- haha. And we all came down to KK especially for it. But ah well. Atleast I got to experience my first ever backpackers, which was cool and we got to catch up with the others. Aman and I are back at school now and tought our first classes- all 6 of them :-S. We didn't hava clue we were teaching as we were told we wern't taking any classes until later in the week-so there wasa bit of major improv going on infront of the class. We thought we were just going to introduce ourselves briefly,ie. say hello, who we were, where we're from etc. But the teacher slyly left us and it turned out we were taking the class- ahh! So we just decided to play Hangman on the board. The kids were definatley not as highly diciplined as we thought they would be. Some of them were darn right cheecky. But I'm sure we'll get some control in the next couple of weeks- we hope! I'm terrified tho cos it looks like Aman's going to be spending most of her time with the deaf children so I'm gona have to fend for myself.
We've now been told that we don't begin formal teaching until next week but I don't trust that- definately gona have something prepared just incase!
We have also been given a section of the notice board to post information about ourselves and hold competitions for the kids.
Yesterday, Aman and I stood at the back of the main hall to listen to the assembly but we were spotted by the headmistress (who was sitting on the stage with the rest of the teachers, facing the students) and she autimatically ushered us to the stage-soo embarassing. The huge hall was completely full and every head turned to look at us. So we sheepishly went up on stage and sat with the rest of the teachers. We were then dragged to the mic to make a speech but the mic wasn't realy working so I don't think they heard aything we were saying- but they were still all grinning at us. The headmistress kept saying things like -"aren't they beautiful, aren't they pretty"- and the whole school was cheering-scaaary stuff- never felt so white. They really do think all white people are famous in some way.
Sat through the rest of assembly- maajor sweatage going on- was so so hot. One of the teachers for the deaf, befriended Aman, which is great cos she's like a second mentor.
She asked us to come with her to the teacher's meeting. We did so and the headmistress asked all of the teachers with poor English, to sign up with us for tuition. No one has so far.
Catherine (the teacher for the deaf) filled us in on the gossip about certain teachers. She confirmed many of our dodgie suspicions about a certain someone and she warded us away from them.
She previously invited Aman to a get together on Sunday night in KK, with some of friends she calls "the working deaf". I asked if I could come along and she said ofcourse- So anyway, she said to us during the teachers meeting (while we were gossiping),that we can crash at hers after the doo and she'll bring us to school the next day.
After Aman and I finished our last 2 lessons- we completely KO'd in our room-totally knackered.
Penelope came to pick us up at 8.30 to take Aman to the doc. We were going to find out if it is safe for her to scuba dive with her hearing. Luckily we got the go ahead from the doc. Although he said that if we experience any sinus pain when we are getting deeper, to stop immediately and come back up. He also asked us which diving school we were going with and cleared them as a really good organisation, which is cool.
Aman recieved her credit cards in the post as well today. We've been waiting for aages for them to come through, since she had her bag snatched. So now we can go ahead and pay for our Hong Kong flights. Only prob is that we can't find any time to get to the travel agent as it's only open office hours and we're in school then.
We had another long chat with the girls in our room last night- they seem so open minded. And Meesha has got soo much to say- she's a dudette- she speaks so proudly of Sabah and how amazing life is here especially since people are not fighting over money. They told us about the "jungle people" and how they walk for 8-10 hours to go home to their families in the holidays, and how they live on so little but love it there. One of the girls that lives in the jungle is friends with Meesha+shares a dorm in the Ashrama (hostel) with her.It was her birthday last night so we gave her some shortbread- its the only kinda present we have!
