Little Kirsty Ventures to Pastures New
Our return flight was delayed for a few hours, causing us to miss our transfer in Brunei but twas cool cos the airline put us up in Brunei Hotel for the night and gave us dinner and breakfast for free. Prob the best accom we've stayed in and twas freee. We arrived at the hotel at about 10pm with a few other people and we befriended another traveler called Kong. He was from Beijing (I think) but studies in Oz and can speak perfect English. So we ended up hitching a taxi with him around Brunei and saw all of the main sights in the dark. The mosques were spectacular- glowing gold in the dark. Got some fab pics.We also visited the Sultan's (King's) Palace, which also looked mega impressive, especially as we viewed it over the water while some locals sat fishing. In the morning we returned to one of the local mosques to see what it looked like in the day light and was just like a postcard- reflected perfectly in the still water surrounding it. Nearby there was also a local village of wooden huts perched over the water. The taxi was absolutely extortionate tho- tis crazy how much more expensive Brunei is compared to Sabah even though they are just next door.
We were picked up from KK airport by our "personal" taxi driver, Mr Soo. We dropped all of our bags off in our room at the school then headed straight to KK for the weekend. We found a rockin backpackers. Tis really nice- free breakfast, coffee, tea, hot showers, free internet access, friendly staff and looadsa traveling info for Sabah. Oh and a huge tv with dvds to choose from- so pretty good! Soo nice to have a warm shower- even though we're boiling as it is!
Aman and I headed to Mamutik Island today. Unfortunately it was overcast + mega humid, yet still hot. Still managed to top up on my tan .
We met some Ozzie girls that are doing 2 months volunteer work in Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary on the East coast, so we'll hopefully meet up with them when we visit Sepilok in our March hols. One of the girls also gave us some tips on climbing the mountain (Mt Kinabalu) as she climbed it last summer. She didn't make it sound tooo bad but then we spoke to another dude on the boat from Sweden and he said he couldn't walk for 3 days after and that the descent was a lot worse than the climb cos it did in his joints. So if anyone has any tips on how to climb down the mountain without jarring my joints, please let me know!
We're meeting an ex deaf student from SMK DPM tonight. Going out for dinner with her and one of her friends. I've also been sorting out meeting with the Guides from Sabah and should be getting stuff finalized this weekend. Plans are to hit another island tomorrow with Edward, Peter, Jade and Madline (Ozzies), whereas Georgie and Kathryn have a wedding to go to with the teachers from their school.
Sounded like they all hada fab time over CNY hols. Georgie, Kathryn and the boys went camping by the hot springs and the boys completed their Paddy diving course. The girls from Sarawaak went to Singapore, still need to hear how they got on.
We're hoping to go white water rafting in the next few weeks, wana do the mountain asap as well and we're all up for chilling out at the hot springs soon as well. Plans for March are to visit Turtle Island, the orang-utans and Sandakan on the East coast- really can't wait for that holiday!! But for now, I gota go and figure out some lesson plans and moisturize my pink shoulders :-S
