Good day today. I got up at 9 and did some reading for class until about noon.
Then I went to the Wellcome Collection Gallery to go to an exhibit called SKIN. It was very cool. There were a variety of objects including photographs, medical drawings, biblical paintings, wax molds, models, video etc. The first part showed bodies with their skin being removed to show the muscles underneath. Then there was a section illustrating dermatological conditions and a third section about the impressions of skin (masks, tattoos, make up etc.). Overall it was very interesting. It was not quite what I expected. I thought it was going to be similar to the Bodies Exhibit that tours the US. I'm rather glad that it wasn't that because this exhibit gave me a lot to think about - making my writing about it for class pretty easy.
After the exhibit I went to class. On my way there I passed by the main University College London campus (our classes are on a little sub-campus a few blocks south). It resembled a traditional American university. It had a gated entrance that lead to a quad within a block of buildings. If I had more time I would have gone in and explored. It was all very grand.
In class today we primarily talked about Francis Bacon and Damian Hirst (both British contemporary artists). I like Damian Hirst's work, and his approach to art, very much. Franics Bacon I am more on the fence about. Some pieces that we saw in a video we watched, I liked very much but others that we discussed, and I've seen in the Tate modern, I'm not a huge fan of. Nonetheless class was pretty interesting. I did feel sleepy during the second half, after we had a break. I felt like this last time we were in the classroom but I had accredited that to getting used to 3 hour classes. I heard other people remarking on that too. Our professor's lecture content and style are the same before and after the break but for some reason we all feel incredibly tired when we return from outside.
After class I came back to the flat and intended on taking a nap (I was just so exhausted) but I ended up doing the dishes and cleaning the kitchen instead.
Now I'm going to bed early for once. I'm hoping to wake up early and start working on my essay in the morning.
I start work tomorrow!!!! I'll keep you informed as much as I can (they keep warning us to share no more than our organisation's name and mission).
Then Stacy arrives late tomorrow night!!!!! We have a lot planned for the weekend and while she's here we are going to solidify future travel plans (me going to Barcelona in November, Stacy coming to England in December and the two of is going to the countryside). Ellie, Dawn and I are also hopefully booking our trains to Edinburgh tomorrow so by the end of the week I will finally have some firm travel plans.
Well time to hit the hay.
Night.
