Lovely day at Dover.

I got up and made my way to St. Pancras station and hopped on the next train to Dover (it took a little over an hour).

Once there I wandered around the town on my way to the Castle. It isn't difficult to find. It is up on a large hill which towers over the town and everything around it. It was a rather steep climb to get up there though - one which I was not prepared for. And once you get to what you think is the top, you purchase your ticket then have to walk further up the hill to meet a tour which ends with a tall spiral staircase and the rest of the property is riddled with hills and long staircases. I wish I had worn sneakers but at least it was a clear day so nothing was slippery.

The first thing I did was go on a tour of the tunnels that made up the hospital, barracks, offices etc. used during wartime. This was pretty cool. In total there are almost 4 miles of tunnels. We were brought around throughout the different rooms, which had audio playing that mimicked what happened in those rooms. You heard chefs, surgeons, ambulances, air raid sirens, bombs etc. They made the lights flicker and go out when the place was 'bombed'. Some of the little kids got really scared by that. If this wasn't a semi-serious historical place, I would have expected people to jump out at us from all the dark corners. After that I went on a short tour/talk about the admiralty look out. This was cool but was very military and artillery centered, which I was not into that much. The lookout did give a fantastic view of the Channel and Calais. After that I wandered around the grounds, going into the chapel and the great tower. Basically the whole day was a lot of hills and steps.

Then I walked back to the station, getting some snacks on the way, and went back to London. Back at the flat I watched a movie and did some research for Windsor tomorrow.
