We were all awake by 7am and decided we should get up and pack while it was dry. It didn't take as long as we expected and we were on the road by 8.45am. The roads were fairly slow going with plenty of traffic moving in both directions so we decided on a morning tea stop in Marlo. Unfortunately, there wasn't a lot open in Marlo but we did see the mouth of the Snowy River as it emptied into the ocean. We back tracked to Orbost, a lovely looking place, and found a café with an outside courtyard. The kids were just tucking into pancakes when Doris and Jeorg appeared - they had seen our car parked on the street and came in search. We sat and had a coffee together and then left them to explore while we drove onto Mallacoota. Nothing in Victoria has seemed particularly remote - until now! Mallacoota is a fantastic little place not far from the NSW border. The town has a couple of caravan parks but the shire offers cheap camping (including all the facilities) along the foreshore reserve - over 700 sites! We were a bit wary at first, especially after our experience at Rosebud, but the reserve is amazing. It runs along the banks of the estuary just before it tips out into the Bass Strait. We are opposite a park and the toilets - perfect for the kids. We set up camp and were doing quite well until we realized the walls of the annex wouldn't meet. When we tried to fix it up a connection in one of the annex arms broke and we thought the whole thing was stuffed. We were stood looking at it like idiots with open mouths just willing it to mend itself when the heavens opened!! Just before the bad language hit full flow a couple from Queensland came over and offered help. Together the two men repaired the damage while the women swapped free camping sites! We had finally got the annex all sorted and unpacked when Doris and Jeorg pulled in next door - they have decided to stay for a couple of days. We put raincoats on and explored the foreshore and town with Jeorg. We saw a beautiful seal swimming in the shallows of the lake right next to the caravans camping on the lake's edge. There were also heaps of pelicans. We found a take away shop in town that cooked everything so we ordered dinner and came home for showers while it was being cooked. After dinner, Doris and Jeorg came over for a drink and a chat for the evening. Unfortunately we were stuck inside as it was still raining.
