Woke around 7ish to the sound of rain and realised we had left all the bathers and towels on the line but it was too late to bring them in. The wind was howling up from the river and the awning sounded as if it would snap in half so neither Nick or I got back to sleep. The kids slept on until about 8 and then stayed in bed for an extra half hour playing so I think the neighbours were pleased that they got a peaceful lie-in! Nick made everyone breakfast while I tidied up and then we cranked the generator up for coffee. Eventually we got down to a couple of hours schoolwork although we all had to cram in the van and work on the double bed as well as the table because the winds were too strong to work outside. After lunch we headed off to explore Nelson and the surrounding area. We drove around the National Park initially, which gave us time to charge up all the electrical equipment through the car. We took a look at one of the paid campsites in the National Park and it was lovely but would have cost us $23.50 compared to the free site we are on now. Next we went into Nelson but there was very little there. We went to see Nelson Beach but couldn't walk on it as it started to rain just as we got there. We decided to head into Mount Gambier for groceries and found Woollies just off the main road. We stocked up on enough meals for the next few nights and then headed home. It rained on and off all evening and was far too cold to sit out so we played a few rounds of Gubs and the kids watched a movie before bed. We ran the generator for a few hours in the evening to recharge the batteries and help us use the water pump, which didn't annoy our neighbours as the wind whipped the sound away. At this rate we should be able to last a week without moving to a powered site.
