We left fairly early this morning to get the 10:00 ferry to Rottnest Island situated just off the Perth coast. It was a smooth 30 minute journey.
Rottnest is about 11 km long and 4.5 km at its widest point. It is owned by the government and the only people who live there have to have a full time job. It is also home to the quocka a small furry marsupial and about 17,000 live on the island. When the Dutch landed on the island in the 1600s they thought these animals were large rats because of their long tail. They called the island Rats Nest and this became Rottnest.
We had a bus trip around the island stopping at a couple of places to view the beauty. There are many sandy bays and the sands are silvery and the sea is the most beautiful turquoise in places. We managed to see a couple of stingrays and dolphins frollicking in the waves and two large osprey nests but sadly no Ospreys.
After a snack we had intended to go for a swim but the nearest beach had a lot of sea grass that had been washed up on the shore after the recent storms so we just meandered for a while. Then surprise surprise we found a Simmo's ice cream parlour. My Old English Toffee was scrummy and Mick had liquorice which was black and looked revolting but he assured me it was good!
I took a few photos of Rottnest so do look at the album. We had a lovely day.
There won't be a blog tomorrow as we are going to a funeral with the family.

Carol and Mike Still more snow showers up here today and the fields are still full of it. The temperature rarely gets above 2 degrees even in the daytime but I have spotted some snowdrops now I am waiting for the daffodils and it will be Spring - Hooray! 27 years married tomorrow
Jenny & Kim What a wonderful day you had. I don't think that I could live with all of those quockas. We went for a walk today and it was quite warm in the sunshine. However unlike you we had five layers of clothes on!!
Roni Isn't it interesting how colonised places get their names. Is the island a nature reserve? I have been at work again, today, teaching in reception!! Enjoy relaxing!
