Today was a nostalgia trip for Mick.
We left at 8:00 and drove to Dongara for breakfast. Had a quick look at the marina at Port Denison then turned east.
Through Mingenew, Morawa, Latham, Maya, Buntine and then Wubin. This is where Mick's Dad built the roadhouse in 1963 and they left there to go to another roadhouse in Busselton in 1966. The Wubin roadhouse still had the same layout but the outside shell and house at the back had changed. The town was a collection of old houses, the shops that were there had closed and the station was now an information centre. Mick was slightly disappointed with it but was glad we made the effort to go there.
Halfway between Wubin and Perth is New Norcia a monastic town. There are no houses, just a monastery, a church, two old colleges, a hotel and a few other buildings. Two of the buildings used to be an orphanage for the 'stolen children', the controversial practice of taking children from parents who were still alive supposedly for their best interests!
We had a drink in the hotel and I sampled the Abbey ale.
We eventually arrived back in Perth at 7:00. I'm not sure how many kms we have travelled over the last few days but an awful lot. But it was worth it.
