We set off at 8:30 this morning and our first stop was Geraldton for breakfast. Geraldton is a large town on the coast and the only town of any size in the area.
From there we continued along the main road but turned off at Northampton for Kalbarri where there is a national park. As we approached Kalbarri there were high cliffs that had been eroded into gorges and creeks. We went and looked ar Eagle Gorge, not particularly spectacular but there were some excellent examples of erosion in the cliffs.
Kalbarri was a very pretty seaside town with a bay and a sand spit but not a lot to do. There are supposed to be lots of pelicans here but we didn't actually see any. There are dome river gorges in the park that I would like to have seen but they were a 25km drive along an unsealed road ie a dirt road. Apart from the fact we didn't have time, a 4 eheel drive car would be needed!
Leaving the park we rejoined the main road and travelled about 100km until we reached the Billabong roadhouse. At one point we drove 13km without a single bend in the road and averaged 110km all the way! Roadhouses are a lifeline on these remote roads to provide fuel, food and drink and of course toilets! Next we continued to the Overlander roadhouse where we turned off for Denham. I managed to see a real, wild emu near the edge of the road and I thought I saw kangaroo as well lying under a tree.
It was another one and a half hours before we reached Denham which is about 28km from Monkey Mia. There was the most beautiful sunset as we were driving along. We booked into some holiday cottages at 7pm. It felt as though we had been driving all day but in order to see thes places you have to travel the distances. Luckily there is no traffic!
Tomorrow we are off to Monkey Mia early to see the dolphins.
