17th September
Day one was a day of exploring Fraser Island along the beaches north. The first stop was the coloured sands at Red Canyon, then onto Champagne Pools via the soft sand roads past Indian Head. The pools were beautiful but to the girls dismay there was no champagne. From there we went to Orchid Beach going around and around in circles looking for the road to Marloo Bay but 11 kilometres and an hour later we ended up in Wathumba beach. After lunch and a swim we found our way back to Orchid Beach and then onto Marloo Bay. We had an eventful afternoon of fishing, Joe D caught a couple of good size tailor, Colin a little tailor and a dart fish.

The next day the boys were on the beach at 7 am to try their luck at fishing but it had run out.
We decided to explore the south of the island down to Eurong and Lake Mackenzie. The drive out there was extremely rough with lots of soft sand. Joe B was the tour guide and was showing us all how to drive in soft sand, he came across a deep hole and stopped his vehicle to survey the hole and that where he stayed. Joe D got his Nissan recovery vehicle into action and extracted him from the bog. We filled the hole with sand and with pace Joe B got through.
Once out at the lake we were amazed at the beauty of this beautiful place. We had a swam from a while and decided to go to Happy Valley for lunch. Half an hour up the track we came to stop with a line of vehicles waiting for the track to be clear of bogged vehicles. The two Joes and myself walked up the hill to give a hand. After much digging, pushing, pulling and letting down of tyres the first vehicle was released. The next vehicle attempted the soft patch, we started again. Forty five minutes later we had a shot at the hill but thankfully we all made it, its going to be a late lunch.
A pit stop was required at Eurong, while most of us were looking in the shop, Es drove across to across to the toilets. A call came across the radio "I'm bogged”, the quiet sound of giggling and the two Joes went to the rescue.
We arrived at Happy Valley at 3:05pm, lunch menu finished at three so hamburgers it had to be and a couple of beers to wash them down. Back to camp and another attempt to catch fish but alas we came away empty handed.

A new day and more exploring to be done, we are off to Sandy Cape and the lighthouse.
First we had to see if there was any champagne in the Champagne Pools and there was. Onto Orchid Beach shop to buy some bait and then onto South Ngkala Rocks. There was a queue of vehicles on the beach waiting for their turn to have a shot at the bypass road around the rocks and you guessed it there were bogged vehicles. All three of us made it through without stopping.
We negotiated the North Ngkala Rocks and sped up the beach (at 80 kph of course) to Sandy Cape, around the corner and stopped at the walkway to the lighthouse. We explored the WWII bunker and the lighthouse and headed back up the beach to do some fishing, again no luck.
There was a couple of whales frolicking a hundred meters off the beach as we passed. We headed back so that we didn’t miss the tide and get trapped north of North Ngkala rocks. We got back to Orchid Beach and thought we better try the pub out to see if the beer was OK.
Another session of fishing with only a couple of small fish.

A rest day was declared, so fishing and sunbaking was all that was allowed.
Well there was plenty of sun but there was no fish...........
