Day 1 - 27th Aug
A little back tracking today, we are heading south west to Lawn Hill National Park. This was a fairly uninteresting drive through the large cattle properties of northern QLD. We stopped at Gregory Down for a counter meal at the pub. Three chicken schnitzels with salad and one calamari with salad plus beer and we were on our way again.
We arrived at Lawn Hill campsite mid-afternoon and went to the Ranger Station to organise sites for the night. This is where QLD Nat. Parks come into their own. The first call to QLD Parks revealed that there were no sites available and only two available the next night and three the next night. A person standing behind us at the time overheard our dilemma and suggested we stay on the site opposite him as the people on that site had left a day early. Back on the phone to QLD Parks to sort the next two days out. Apparently you can't put a trailer on a tent site, you can’t have more than one vehicle on a site, luckily the Rangers at the park are a lot more relaxed. After a good hour of negotiation we ended up with site 3 first night, site 8 the next and sites 16 and 17 the last night. That wore us out so we set up camp have a few quiet beers to calm down.
The guy that put us onto the vacant site came over for a beer over two because we figured we owed him that. After introductions we got into the usual where are you from, what do you do, to discover he lives down the road from Joe and Jen at Hazelwood North and works at Loy Yang Power as an Operator. It is a small world.
Day 2 - 28 Aug
We waited at camp for a while hoping that the person that had booked site 3 might swap for site 8 and we could stay put. By lunchtime no one had arrived so we went for a walk to have a look at the Cascades. This is a lovely shaded walk through a treed area beside the river. The Cascades were not flowing as the water level was too low but it was still quite pretty. Joe fed figs to the monstrous catfish which kept us amused for a while. Eventually the person booked on site 3 turned up with a huge van so off we shuffled to site 8. We all went down to the river for a swim and cool off late afternoon. Stevo our new besty came over for more beers and banter.
Day 3 - 29 Aug
First thing we did was to shuffle our campers off to sites 16 and 17 then off to explore the Indarri waterfalls. A short 900 m walk to a little bit of paradise. We swam in the clear calcium rich aqua coloured water for an hour or so and then returned to camp for lunch. After lunch we hired two double canoes and paddled upstream through the gorge to the water fall. From there we dragged the canoes to the top side of the falls. The small lake above the falls narrowed in through another gorge to another set of waterfalls, the end of the journey. On the way back we saw two turtles and two crocodiles. It is amazing that the cane toads haven’t claimed them. The paddle back to camp was testing the shoulders out, haven’t done any exercise like that for a while. That night Joe and I took torches down to the river to spot aquatic life. The big catfish were cruising around and we spotted a meter long barramundi cruising the shallows. The other things that were in abundance were cane toads.
