Soongies' Great Adventure
This morning got off to a good start. The airport transfer shuttle arrived on time at 10:30 and we got to the airport with plenty of time for the first leg: Budapest to Hamburg. The plan was flight at 1:15 and then a 4 hour wait in Hamburg before taking another flight from Hamburg to Manchester. Once we checked in and got through security, we found out the flight to Hamburg was delayed 20 mins – no problem – Calvin had time for KFC for lunch. Then we got an email saying our flight from Hamburg to Manchester had been cancelled! Kate's initial reaction: crying and saying that we aren’t going to be in England for Christmas with her family! As we had booked through Eurowings directly, the email said to contact Eurowings to arrange a refund and that accommodation expenses would be reimbursed. The wifi at the airport was terrible so we were very grateful for our Australia Post TravelSIM (as there was no Eurowings shopfront inside). Meanwhile our flight from Budapest to Hamburg was delayed another 25 mins – fortunately as it gave us more time to sort our flights out! After being put on hold for a while, Calvin finally got hold of a Eurowings person who said that once in Hamburg we should go to the counter there and get put on the next available Eurowings flight to Manchester (which would have been the 26th December!). Calvin put on his assertive voice and said that was not good enough and they eventually agreed to refund us and pay the fare difference if we could find an alternative flight on another airline. Meanwhile Kate had called mum to get her to help look up possible flights either from Budapest to Manchester, from Hamburg to Manchester or either of these options to Liverpool. Mum called back to say there was a direct flight from Budapest to Manchester at 5:35pm today with Jet2 ($1,000 for the 2 of us but Eurowings will pay - hopefully)! We tried to book this online but were not able to as the flight time was too close. So then trusty Australia Post TravelSIM to the rescue – Calvin called Jet2 and, after a long time, the flight was booked! But our baggage was on the Eurowings flight! So then we had to walk to the boarding gate to say that we weren’t going on the flight and we needed our baggage offloaded. They were very kind and were quite happy to do this (as the flight was boarding) but it just took a while. We had plenty of time to kill until our next flight so it was ok. We then had to leave the boarding area, get our luggage from a carousel and then go through the whole process again. We weren’t able to check in for a while, as it was still a while until the flight, so we just sat in a café (whilst writing the majority of this blog). Finally it was time to check in (again). When we got to the counter, they could not find us on the system! Calvin had received a text message from Jet2 with the booking reference number so we were fortunately able to show it to prove that we actually did have a booking. We also mentioned that we had only booked the flight a few hours ago so they said it probably hadn’t got onto their system yet. We had to wait at the side for them to make calls / check in other passengers. It was our turn again and we took ages at the counter for it to get sorted. Everyone was glaring at us – 'those annoying people holding up the queue’. Finally we got our boarding passes but, because it took so long and security was packed, we weren’t able to have our (2nd) planned KFC snack before boarding the flight as we were having to rush a bit. We bought pricey 2 minute noodles on the plane though as we were quite hungry. After a short 2 hour and 45 minute flight we arrived in Manchester to be greeted by Auntie Fiona and our friend, Amy Schelfhout (from Geraldton, who has been travelling around Europe and will be spending Christmas with us too). It was so nice to see some familiar, friendly faces! When we arrived home we were met by Uncle Richard, Andrew (Kate’s cousin) and Barnaby (the amazing poodle) and had a delicious late night dinner of soup, bread and fruit salad. After quite a bit of chatting, it was finally time for bed. What a day!
